THE REPORT
Steve Fraley, BBT
Co-owner & Guide

Karen and I decided that Tess needs a full time play mate… We picked up, our vet guessed, 6 week old “Ginger” from the local shelter where she along with eight brothers and one sister were dropped off in the middle of the night and found that very morning on Thursday the 23rd.

Ginger is settling in nicely as the newest member of both the Fraley and BBT family and has a great disposition. Tess is doing a fantastic job as well in her role as mother/older sister/playmate and it is our hope that her other siblings find great homes as well…

If interested you can call Lake County Animal Control at 231-745-3079 to check on their status. Most of the males were black with either brown or white markings and the other female was about the same color as Ginger.

Hi Guys, The shop is stocked and we are ready so please stop by (Or call us.) for all your Salmon season needs! (We’ve also got those big inventory bills to pay now. ;^) Also, due to some unforeseen circumstances we STILL have some prime dates available for guide trips. (Early September? I can’t remember that ever happening for more than a day or two tops and that’s as good as it gets! Call the shop and lock one in, we’ll have a great time…

Our (John and I combined) ”current” open guide dates thru October 15th (*denotes two guides available) are:

August 22, 23*, 26 & 31 September 3*, 4*, 5*, 6, 7, 8, 9*, 10*, 12, 20 & 21 October 7, 11, 12, 14* & 15*

For those of you that follow our forum’s various threads much of this report may sound a bit redundant, but there’s not much new to add to what I’ve already said in some follow ups to others post…

i.e. “Most” of the upper to mid river sections have at least one or two holes that are holding ten to twenty fish or so. (That’s really not a lot of fish just yet, especially for whole sections.) These are the very same holes they always are early on and they are holding the fish that have trickled up over the past month or so. Those fish tend to pool in those holes and hold more so than they do down lower. (ie. Custer/Scottville/Twin Bridges)

Personally I don't want to fish them any higher than the Custer/Scottville/Twin Bridges area just yet, but I do know of some guys that have been targeting those certain pools further up and doing pretty well drifting flies in them. That being said (And just another one of the many reason’s I‘d rather stay low for a while) with so few spots to choose from just yet in each section, getting in one may present a challenge…

I’ve now been downriver four out of the last five mornings and have hit fish each day, but nothing heavy yet. (ie. Went 1 for 3 on sticks both this morning and yesterday morning with John on short scouting missions, not bad for just a few hours, but not “hot” either.) I did one evening down there yesterday as well and we got completely blanked… Most I've talked to down there in the mornings have hit either none or just a few like us, but we did see a few more wakes the past two mornings than we have been moving up.

One from Friday...

..one from Monday...

…and one from today.

The fish we are hitting are HOT and hard to handle making it pretty darn exciting and things should break loose in a big way any day now as they always do around this time downriver regardless of conditions. There’s nothing quite like seeing your first real wall of fish of the season heading up a flat toward you in the bend and we hope that you’ll be there with us to see it!

I’m going to cut this short now as I’ve got my usual Tuesday night ride with the guys to get ready for, but in the mean time, since Kevin is coming up this weekend (Not the whole weekend as he says in the video however! :^) to fish with us I thought I’d toss up a video rewind of his trip last year. (I haven’t had the time or the inclination to do any new ones recently, but watching some from last year is giving me the itch.) I look forward to seeing all of you either in the shop, around the motel or on the river this season and… Let’s all play nice and make it a great one!

Tight lines All,
Steve
