I'd like to get Steve or Bob's thoughts on this, but appreciate any input from anyone on the site.

Whats the best way to clean a fly reel ...short of taking it apart?

I'm getting my Harris solitude IV cleaned up for the salmon season and it stays pretty clean, but I do notice a "slight" sound of probably sand in the drag knob when I tighten the drag down past about 70% and would like to get it out of there.

Is soaking the reel in warm water a good way? I had thought about spaying it with WD40 but didnt know is that would cause the disc's to slip in the drag later on?

Thanks

but those reel were ment to say sealed maybe backing off the drag fully and and shakeing it about in a bucket of water may get it out

good luck and tight lines rhino..........

Thanks rhino I'll probably try that tonight and see what happens. Anyone from BBT got a suggestion?

I have a good number of reels and each seem to have their own specified cleaning method. Ideally if you have the orginal instruction/manual booklet that is always the best to follow. If possible I always try to keep box/paper work for each reel so its easy to look up later. Short of taking apart the bucket of water method will help but not always work best.

Just now saw this, but I think you have the right idea. Try the water rinse first, it won't hurt the reel at all, but after that it's out with the tools or send it back to Harris for a claening. We can give you some contact info from the shop...
