Material Swap

With the long winter months ahead of us I think most of use will be spending some time at the bench getting ready for those beautiful trout, steel, bass and many other species! I don't know if theres any interest, but if I can get 10(me being the 11th) people I would like to swap about 5 dollars worth of material.

Here's how it works, send me something you use for tying like deer hair or something of that sort, only send an amount worth of about 5-10 bucks, anything more than that you may be disappointed on what ya get back. When ya send it ya need to include return envelope or box with postage but NO return address cause each thing needs a different size box.

I will take the eleven names and draw them out of hat, if ya already have a ton of, like me with squirrel tail I will see if I can use it or someone else would be willing to trade there item for yours.

I know I have accumulated a number of things, some that I won't be using.......without alot of thought I'm thinking maybe an online swap......maybe, I post a list of what I got, you post a list, others post a list and swap accross that way...........though I'm not adverse to your idea.........is interesting.:)

The list wouldnt be bad idea actually if we can get more intrest, my list would be short, Deer Hair.

My dad got 2 bucks this weekend.:confused: :D

I'm not in the position to get involved in a trade right now but I do feel like I owe you for the squirrel tail somehow. Not sure what you would want or need. You did a nice job on the tail, have ou ever done the same on a deer hide? I think you could get yourself a nice supply of deer hair if you scrape, salt, scrape, salt,scrape and then borax it until dry. Just a thought. I've never done it before but this is how it was explained to me.

This time of year is a little hectic for me, hope you undertand. PM me on your wish list and when I take an inventory on my supplies I'll see what I can send ya.

this is cool. I have squirrel hide (tail and body) rabbit hide, deer hide (body and belly), deer tail, peacock wing feathers. these are really cool. some are golden rust color and the others are black and tan barred.

Chaino, anything extra I am sure I would be willing to take, I hate sitting down at eh bench and not having material to tie with!

With deer you scrap, then apply a tanning solution and it will be just like leather, I plan doing that for this swap!

I've accumulated tying materials since I began tying flies which I have too much of - various feathers, maraboo, deer hair, chenille, etc. which I would love to trade off. I think a material exchange is great idea! I suggest one thing - don't limit it to a dollar amount, rather make it more like a bartering (flea-market) type of arrangement where 2 or more interested parties can make any deal they like. :)

Here is what I have that is unique.

-golden rust wingfeathers from a peacock (great boits for a golden stone) i'm only willing to give up one of these.
-another wing feather that is light tan/dark brown barred. i use this for wing casings on nymphs and hex's
-peacock hearl (entire feather) instead of green it is the same as the previous feather...tan and dark brown segments along the hearl.
-various squirrel tails/ hides
-rabbit hide
-a deer tail
-patch of deer hide

i'll try to get pics some feathers i mentioned. I have never seen them in a store and they may be hard to imagine if you haven't seen one before.

im up for deer but i dont think that i have much to trade. I do have a goose wing that i could take the feathers off. which leads me to another question. how do you make a wind not smeel its been in a freezer since the begging of the season? let me know.

umm that's a a good question neeso1aj, I'd say skin it out get all the fat and meat off it tack it to a board and let it air dry.

Hows about everyone sends me there material with a pre paid box without your name on it so I can have a proper sized box for everyone. I will draw names from a hat as to be fair as possible, some will get luckier than others, maybe a material lottery?;) But I'm sure no one will be to disappointed, and if ya already have a ton of it I will trade with you since I have a ton of nothing!

Any objections? I have no prob If you think its unfair, if ya do ya got any better ideas? Im just trying to kinda brain storm a little here.

I haven't forgot about the material swap just real busy. I've recently changed jobs and am commuting from the Detroit area to Holland on the weekends. Sometime after Xmas vacation I should be able to get active again on the forum - fly swaps, materials, etc.

whomever gets the rabbit hide i hope you don't mind its not the best job in the world. I only used borax and salt, I didn't tan it or anything. It was a hack job skinning it also. It is actually a couple years old so it is definately preserved. It was just the biggest I had...
