Hello all,

I am new to fly fishing and love to catch Steelies and Salmon. A guy i work with talked me into getting a fly outfit. He told me his fav flies to use for both of the above mentioned, But i was wondering if you had any must have flies that i need to purchase. Thanks in advance for your help and wisdom.

You must have eggs. Yarn eggs are cheap and seem to work, the flashier eggs cost a few cents more, but a lot guys swear by them. Some large Hex, and Stone fly patterns are also a must have. There are a lot of patterns to pick from, so concentrate on getting a few at first, and add to your collection as you find new patterns that interest you.

Egg patterns are my go to for Salmon and Steelhead. Egg Sucking Leech is a good producer. Stone Flies are a must have. Along with what the other's before me mentioned.

These are just a few that I carry with me at all times!!

The book "Steelhead Dreams" is a very good book about fly fishing for Steelhead in the Great Lakes. It has a very nice section in the back of the book with color plates for popular patterns.
