Just thought I would throw a report up on the forum. The Muskegon River has at times, been fishing well over the last two weeks. On the trout front, they have been coming to the net on a variety of different techniques. When fishing the faster riffle areas, nymphing under an indicator or large dry has worked. Prince nymphs, scuds and caddis pupa have been effective. The larger trout seem to like the cooler more oxygenated riffle areas. Swinging soft hackles in the slower currents or in the tail outs have also worked. The lighter brown patterns have worked the best. Some trout have also come to the occasional streamer. Patterns that imitate crayfish and wounded baitfish, along with skunk patterns, retrieved slowly have produced trout. The best colors are crayfish, white, yellow and olive. Below is a nice rainbow that hit a scud pattern -

On the smallmouth front, as the water heats up, the smallie fishing has been too. Lately the smallies are starting to look up and hit poppers, sliders, and the occasional hopper. Fishing close to the bank and near cover is the ticket. Streamers also have been working. Use larger patterns than the ones for trout; such as Zoo Cougars, Rattlesnakes, Clousers, and the occasional skunk pattern. Colors in white, olive, yellow and chartreuse have been good. For smallies, the faster retrieves have worked vs. the slow deliberate strips.
