Winter Guide Special!

We have plenty of openings for guided trips right now. So please take advantage of our winter special and let’s go fishing. Both full and half day trips running thru March 1st, here's the deal... You can either get a free nights lodging with any full day trip or, a full day rate of $275. (Half day special rate is $195) We sincerely hope you'll take advantage of this and come spend some quality time out on the water with us!

It is finally February…and almost March!!! The shortest month of the year is upon us and that much closer to prime time spring steelhead fishing. The fishing has been decent when the weather has allowed us to get out and get after them. But we have experienced some very cold days and night recently that have dropped the water temps into the low 30’s. The river is in good shape with a little bit of shelf ice here and there, but that should clear with the upcoming weather.

We are very excite for this March since the US Fish and Wildlife has decided PERMENANTLY shut down the Custer Lamprey barrier. If you remember last year, the weir was not turned on until April and the March fishing was fantastic! This is a huge step in the right direction with our wild and naturally reproducing fishery. The fish will be able to come and go in their natural cycles/patterns. Get your March guide dates, because it should be awesome fishing!

Both trout and steelhead have been taking a mixed bag of flies lately. Nothing has been super reliable or consistent. Very small eggs and nymphs with light tippet are your best bet right now. But sometimes a high water egg or big leeches will snap them out of their daze. Here are some suggested patterns to try: Chartreuse/steelhead orange, cream clowns, pale glow bugs, grapefruit estaz eggs, wiggle hexes, small stones, small hare ears/pheasant tails and green caddis. Large & flashy leeches fished slow and low can pay-off too. It is fun to try some new patterns and different flies at this time of year. I have been tying a ton lately and have developed some great patterns for this spring.

Look for fish in the soft seams and winter lies. Grid out the pools and runs…do not forget to start in close and work your way across the river. There are plenty of fish in the system.

Here is another great show we will be attending later this winter:

We are in winter mode up here now…The shop hours are now 9:00am to 5:00pm everyday (closed on Wednesdays). We are currently remodeling the bathrooms in the single rooms at the Motel and that will be ready for your spring reservations (so please check them out!). Also, you may want to secure your spring steelheading guide dates now while there are still some good ones left.

Steve and I are wide open right now for guide trips; it’s a great time to take advantage of our winter special and some great weather. Give a call to book a date. Otherwise, we will be out there ourselves. The recent warm up has giving me a breath of spring and cured my cabin fever. I am very excited for the upcoming spring and our fishery this year. Plus, check out Steve’s reports for a great video we shot on his new camera…pretty cool stuff!

Until the next time, take care and enjoy the solitude of the season.

Later & Fish-On!
