I'm coming up from Ohio next week to fish mid week (T-F) and was wondering if I might be able to get some insight on the PM. I've already gotten some great info from several people that are knowledgable on the river but I'm always looking for more. My main question is what areas are best for wading? In an ideal world I'd love to float with a guide the first day to learn more about the river, but finances dictate otherwise.

I'm not looking for anyone's honey holes but just a little bit more insight on areas that are good for wading that are public access. I hope I can figure the rest out myself since I fish for Steel quite often in Lake Erie tribs. Feel free to send me an email at rkieres@hotmail.com if you don't want to post here. Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions you can provide and maybe I'll meet some of you on the river or in the bar for that matter. Tight lines.

The flywater is all very wadeable. The water above Green Cottage has good walk in access, but there is also some private land. The Forest Service has the bounderies well marked. Remember that in Michigan, private property extends all the way to the water, not the "water line", or 15 feet from the water as I have heard from others. You will see well worn trails that cut across the private land. These trails were worn by trespassers. I suggest you don't become one yourself. The one time you can walk on the bank on private property is to get around an obsticle you can't wade around. Don't fish from the bank at that time, just get back into the water is quickly and directly as possible. With that stated, I would suggest you stop by BBT and pick up a map. I have one hanging in my office. It is the best river map I have seen on any MI river. While there explain you are from OH, (they won't hold it against you) and that you are looking for a good wadeable run to fish. They will give you good advice.

Good luck on your trip and I understand the 6 hour drive from Ohio.

My suggestions are to hire a guide (investment) from one of the Baldwin area shops for a day, ask questions, listen and on the other days...WALK or Canoe! like most of us who have earned an understanding of the River as you most likely will over the years to come.

It's a hike but managable and a great way to see the upper fly water, get in at 37 and walk to Green Cottage and hike back up to your car. Also, could get out at Lumberjack approximately midway to Green Cottage.

Take some food and drink and enjoy the outdoors, fishing and exercise, it does a body good.
