Anyone hear anything on the deer population around Newberry? We are making the annual trip to Pike Lake. Will the fires have any impact on hunting the surrounding areas or the deer herd?
We were grouse hunting near Seney and saw very little deer sign relative to the amount of terrain we covered.
If the hunting is poor I guess we can go for steelhead in the Two Heart. Does anyone know where to find them in that system?
Thanks

I can't help you on deer hunting over that way, but if you fish, good luck. You'll have to put some miles on to find them. I've had much better luck in the 2H in December. Best bet is to try the slow bends. Start at the mouth and work your way up river. There are a lot of access roads along the way to poke in and out of.

Got a friend who hunts up that way...says he has seem a lot of deer, mostly does, a few bucks, but nothing to shoot at. I'm sure theres deer up there worth shooting...just find the right spot and put your time in.
Theres no deer left in the U.P.......if you want quality deer hunting. hunt southern lower MI or IN!

FMJ is correct. They have all migrated south this year. I went to Canada to hunt if that makes you feel any better. It's a sad state of affairs up here.

Yeah I know the deer population and size of deer up there does not compare to Washtenaw, Jackson, and other counties down there, but it is a much better experience for us. No other hunters or civilization for that matter.
Just like if I wanted to catch more steelhead I probably would be using bait instead of the fly rod, but the experience is more important.

It's nice being in an area that doesn't look like a pumpkin patch of hunters. At any rate, the deer numbers are definitely up in most areas due to the two mild winters we've had in a row. The southern UP near agricultural areas are absolutely full of deer. The northern UP counties are still below what you'll find in the south, but I believe all the counties are up in counts this year. Good luck to those of you coming up. Drive safe and hunt safe.
