A week ago yesterday I was able to get out and hunt for the first time. Im hunting on a farm field and the owners were more than willing to let me hunt. They had the if its brown its down and if not its eating my crops. I was able to get to my styand at 3:00 pm and about 4:30 meals on hoves walked in. I have never killed a deer with my bow and I watched this doe walk around me for about 20 min. I knew that this deer was going to be sitting on a plate soon. I ended up taking her and by so doing claming the first ever bow kill.

I have sat out a couple more times in that stad not seeing anything other that 3 tom turkeys 2 with 6 inch beards and one dragging on the ground oh how I wished I had a tag.

Tuesday my grandfather passed away and I have found that hunting although something I love is a good relief for my emothions and gets my mind of of things.

Last night I was sitting in a stand at home and had 6 does at the end of my field that I saw even before I got to the stand I was able to avoid spooking them and got into the stand to have them later come in. I also saw a huge 8 point that I cant shoot becasue my brother called it. His stand, his money buying the batte and me comming home from college and shooting his deer wouldnt be very cool. Other then the does comming in and the neighbors dog scaring everything it saw in the field I called it a night.

This morning I went out and Had a buck come in before light and then leave. I then had two does walk at 20 yards and leave without even stopping to say hello. I then had a spike come in and since Im not picky on the size of the antlers but the size of the deer I decided to take him. he ran 50 yards and dropped watched it all and it was the greatest thing ever to get my first buck with a bow and not have to track it.

Those are my two deer this season have one more tag to fill.

Let me know how the rest of you all are doing.

6 inch beards were dragging on the ground? i filed my tag with heavy tom (didn't weigh him) 1 inch spurs, and a 9 inch beard, i didn't think his beard was dragging on the ground. he kept showing up behind a bush while i was deer hunting and sticking his head up. next day i broke out the 12 gauge, three houres later he poped his head up behind the same bush. the next time he raised his head i filled it with turkey load:D . good luck out there

Congrats on your first deer with a bow. I killed my first buck with a bow 12 years ago and I can still remember it like it was yesterday.

I have to give you credit I would have a hard time passing up a "huge 8 point" with a bow because someone else called it, I would hope your brother would be happy for you if you had the opportunity to kill it. Big bucks are elusive enough as it is if you are in a stand and one comes by who knows if you or him would ever see that buck again.

I have passed up a number of smaller bucks this year and have been lucky enough to see a couple good ones that I would take if I had the opportunity. Twice in the last week I have seen bucks chasing does so the rut is starting and we are finally getting into the good part of the season.

ian there were 3 birds two had 6 inch beards and the third one was dragging. My guess becasue i have shot one that was dragging is that the beard was in the area of 12-13 inches.

I have yet to make a shot that counts this season....plenty of opportunity....just not seeing the deer i want to take....most have been younglings save 1 brute that i cover later.

SCREW propriety....when you get a shot on a monster buck with a bow you do EVERYTHING you can to down him.........big bucks are tough to see much less get in to 10-30 yards out and with an open , clear shot. If your brother couldnt be hunter enough to understand this and congratulate you on your kill.........scroom!!

Just my 2 cents considering i have had the buck of a lifetime come see me 2 years running now.........last year i plain blew the shot and drop the shaft right in front of his feet.......he then commenced to smell my arrow then give me the tail and saunter off....this season as i started to draw back on him...he spooked and was gone in a flash........such is archery hunting.....kinda like when you hook into that slob brownie........then your leader breaks.......you thank the creator for the opportunity and chalk it up to 1 lost.

Anywho CONGRATS on that cute lil lass....does eat better than them antlers anywho. Have YET to come up with a recipe to make them horns tender and tasty. :D

Wish me luck.......my elder boy decided to bring home and share with me a major case of the funk......i should be out in my stand right now(69 and sunny with an easterly breeze....PERFECT wind for my 2 of my stands), but here i sit sneezing and slobbering into a snot rag. :( Time is running short for me...idiots to the north will pop off 200 rounds in the first 2 hours of firearms season.....after that the hunting gets decidedly MUCH more difficult:mad: I wont go off about the past 2 seasons tracking wounded animals that i (nor any in our party) did not shoot.

Congrats to you Neeso1aj.

HOw is mine going? Well, first off I have only been out maybe 1 a week since the opener. And have not seen a thing up until thursday night. Had two does come through at last good shooting light. The only problem was that they came in from the right, and my stand is set up for a left hand shot.

When the crossed the trail 15yds away from me, I had no shot. Just had to sit there and wait/hope that they would turn to there left a little. At least giving me at least a quartering away shot. That is what the biggest doe did. She turned to her left a little giving me a nice quartering away shot, but at about 25-30yds, not the 20 I was waiting for.

I slowy stood up, while drawing back. Forgot that my bow hoist rope was on my legand when it fell, the clip it my platform, stopping her in her tracks. Settled down, and set the pin a ways back and let it fly

20 mins later I was on the ground looking at a borken arrow covered in blood :) 1/2 hour later I was on the phone calling my buddy to bring the four wheeler back to drag a nice size doe out of the woods.

Taking her out to Frakenmuth today and getting her made into jerky, summer sausage, and probally some snack stick's

Now just need to wait for buck to show up.

as of today, mine is well i dont know what to say. i go to grand valley, go lakers! and i found some farm land to hunt. this is the first time i have ever hunted farms, iv always hunted public land up neer baldwin. i got out abut 10 times this year and i have passed up many does and have seen a couple small bucks but nothing close, i finally got out tonight the first time in 2 weeks and decided to sit at the other side of a field than i usually do, soo enough a 8 point walks out and i miss it....2 times and i run out of arrows.,...and then he just stnads there for an hour and laughs at me....i dont know what to think....biggest buck i have ever seen, i think i was just shaking too much...there is always tommorow i guess......what can ya do

"What can you do?"

Get back out there and do it again (i'm pretty sure that you will). You could have had the shakes, jerked your release (if you use one), pulled your bow one way or another or, he could have jump'd (ducked) your arrow. Who know's. Just have to get back out there and do it again, hoping that he will show himself again.

IMO, would rather have a complete miss, than to have a wounded animal running around.

My brother taught me a good way to get over that when we were bear hunting in Canada, take a camera, take a picture, then take your shot. Not quite as easy if you are bow hunting I suppose but it worked for me.

awgv,

Dont worry about it. (easy to say, DAMN hard to do , I know) Archery hunting is at best a challenge. As flyrod4steelhead says, be happy you missed clean.

Could have been just about anything went wrong, i missed my buck of a lifetime last season by "gettin the fever" and didnt have my anchor point when i released the string..........dropped the arrow at his feet.

Deep breathing excercises, DONT look at the head (after first glance) hone in on the kill zone.......and DONT worry about controling the heart. THATS the drug that keeps us sitting strapped to trees before dawn and after dark in sub zero weather...........but BOY is it sweeter when you FINALLY see that buck on the ground.

Keep at 'em and better luck next time you see him.

four days ago i went out for a short morning hunt i saw bucks chasing does everywhere. nothing came close enough to shoot. after getting lunch and calling my dad i went back out. i had one spike come in that i would have shot had i not seen over 15 big bucks that day. about a half an hour before it went to dark to hunt a monster chased a doe right past my stand, i made a bleat to stop him pulled and let it fly. I saw the arow stick high and back  . He had to be an 8 pt or better very thick and wide beyond his ears a true monster. i found half a bloody arrow. its been 4 days of searching the swamp he ran into.still can't find him:( :( :( :( :( the other guy who saw it says its the biggest he has seen we estimate a 150 class or better.

Well its the evening of nov 14th and I have been sitting in my stand for the last 2 days and have seen a buck make a walk every time im out and of couse he is just out of range. this afternoon im decided to play with him I moved my stand. Later that afternoon after I threw out some apples and cut down a tree and did everything else I could think of to make a ton of noise I sat down in my tree stand. well the lucky son of a bitch got what he deserved a nice arrow to him. third deer of the year for me looks like im going to be warm while you all are sitting in the woods. I do have another tag to fill though I was asked to go on an excursion by Webberville with a buddy so I think that Im going to get a doe tag.

Hope your opening days are all go well!!!

CONGRATS Neeso1aj!!!!! Nice buck!!!!!! Sure looks tasty!!!!!

My bow season to this point has totally SUCKED....well i shouldnt say that...i have seen MANY deer and have filmed quite a few.

BUT i had a shot on a nice doe @ 10 yards........but she heard my bow sing as i released and she turned....taking the arrow in the guts....took the shot @6:10 p.m.....it started raining 6:15 p.m. I started tracking @6:20.......@1:30 a.m. after tracking across the entire woods i lost her trail in a field of tall grass.    .....I have never minded shooting animals for food.....but i dont think i will ever get over this feeling of wounding a beautiful animal and not retrieving it (even tho i KNOW i made EVERY effort humanly possible to find her)

Then last Wednesday, the 7th, I had a doe come in from the south around 3:30 too far out for a clean shot (about 40 yards) so i just stood still and watched her antics....then i hear a good bit of brush thrashing from the swamp edge behind me....and out steps a nice buck...he walks to within 10 yards of my stand and checks me out closely (after examining him at that range i believe he is the same 5 point i had filmed earlier in the season)after a minute or 2 of close inspection he decides that the doe is MUCH more interesting than i and heads off in that direction.....he gets 25 yards out and behind a tree and drops his head....i draw my bow....he then continues walking and steps into a clearing @ 30 yards...........i take the shot......the shot is true............but alas as i released my string the lower limb of my bow swung out and hit the "gun rail" in front of my 2 man ladder stand.....TINK.... and the buck jumps straight up in the air as i watch my arrow pass cleanly under him. (I thank the creator that it was a clean miss....dont thnk i could hunt anymore having wounded 2 in one season)

Then friday morning, the 9th as i am walking down the trail thru the grass field to get to the trail that takes me into my stands i hear a deer blow at the head of the trail not 10 yards in front of me...i stop dead in my tracks....This BRUTE 8-10 pointer every bit of 200 + pounds steps in front of me and just looks me over...then he walks away thru the tall grass to the edge of the woods on the opposite side, turns broadside and stares at me. Between my partner and i we have seen this brute 6 times....buddy shot and missed him @ 10 yards (suprising considering my bud is better with a bow than a gun and travelled the tri state area shooting in archery competions when he was younger) I had a 10 yard shot on him but as i started to draw the bow he simply took off. Besides the brute buck this day i also saw a 2 1/2 y/o doe in the thick stuff behind my other stand with NO clean shot then as i walk out in PURE FRUSTRATION I saw ANOTHER BIG doe standing looking at me at 40 -45 yards.

I stopped on the way home a bought a new in-line muzzleloader....went tues to the range....1st shot out of the box with iron sights @ 25 yards i was 2 inches high with perfect windage....after getting the Simmons 3-9 x 40 scope dialed to the paper i went to 50 line and dialed her in 2 1/2 inches high, 3 shots 1 1/2 inch group......then went to the 100 line.........1 shot....1 inch high 1/2 inch left.

I DARE ANY DAMN DEER TO STEP OUT AND LOOK AT ME SATURDAY MORNING!!!!!!

I just hope and pray that in taking the past week off from hunting i can get my head back on straight and leave the frustration OUT of the woods, also i pray that when the shooting starts Sat. that i can continue to see deer....more later....i HOPE!

Mike

yes the muzzel loader. I have an omega 50 cal with a 6-18x50 red head. I dare no deer walk with in 200 yards of me. Im 6 inches low at 200 hundred 3 inches at 150 and right on at 100. I have a paralex adjuster greatest thing ever makes it so I can pick 10,20,30,50,100, and 150 oh I can only wait to drop a deer her tracks.

Got another call from him today he was all out of breath. the bastard ended up shooting a 10 point. lucky ******* is what i called him I mean he got 2 deer in less then 12 hours.

Here is the lucky duck with his kills

Yep in line muzzle loaders are the way to go. Last year I made the switch to using mine for all of gun season. It is a Thompson center black diamond express with a $70 Bushnell scope. It shoots about a 2.5 inch group at 100 yards; I could make a shot out to 150 yards with a rest. My favorite part is that deer do not go far when I hit them. Shot a six yesterday went about 1 foot from where I shot it if only I could say the same for the monster I shot during archery.

Finally got one. Everything finally went well today and it was even better that my grandpa was there with me. Got in my stand at around 230, was sittin there kinda dozing off knowin my gradpa wouldnt get in the woods till around 330 and thought that i didnt have a chance of seein anything until then. Well, he got there a little early as I watched him get out of his truck and walk into the woods 200 yds behind me, as soon as he stepped in, bang a big deer jumped up 50 yds away from me, i was smart this time and just saw the horns and looked away. Just like that, he was down, a nice 7 point. It was well worth all the time spent in the woods and i cant explain how nice it was to get my first buck with the guy who taught me it all.

Im the third owner of that PSE it was handed down from a firend of my friends and then that that friend handed it down to me it was one of the new bows on the market in 1993 but 14 years later its still killing. I like it my brother has a new PSE shoots 309 fps no problems with it. there quiet too. I would look into them as well
