View Full Version : pontoon Boat for Fly Fishing
All comments welcome.
I'm considering buying a pontoon boat to use for fly fishing. I'd really like one that I can use on rivers like the PM and be able to fish standing up. Water Skeeter make a couple of models that have what appears to be leaning posts and stripping baskets. Has anybody out there ever used a stand-up model? Does it work? Any other suggestions for other brands or should I just keep saving my pennies to buy a drift boat?
Thanks,
Bear

Bear,
As with anything else, the model that is best for you depends on what you are looking for. A platform to stand and cast may be a really nice feature but may add weight to the boat. I have a 9' Fish Cat that is very comfortable. It does not have a platform. I just jump out of the boat and cast to those promising places. This boat weighs about 60 lbs. without accessories. If it were much heavier, I'm not sure I could handle it easily by myself.

I've also got a fish cat (Streamer). It maneuvers really nicely, though the set-up/take down gets pretty tedious. If I had it to do over, I'd get a fishing kayak.

I own the 12 foot dry fly model. It has the platform and stripping basket. It is extreemly stable and floats well. I highly recommend looking into them. Dave stands by the product with lifetime garentee on the frame. http://www.dryflyfloatboats.com/

thx for the input. I like the dry fy boat with the platform. How is it getting in and out of the boat with the platform?

I second the Dryfly pontoon recommendation. I bought a used 10 foot 2-man this spring and have used it WAY more than I thought I would. It's very functional for both lakes and rivers. I have also used it as a 1 man boat many times and it works great. I recently had the standing platform installed on the front by Dave and it's very stable with 2 guys in the boat. The back seat has the platform also and works really good. Getting in and out is very easy in both the front and back.
The best part about owning the Dryfly boat is Dave (Dryfly owner) is local (near Wellston) and the most personable helpful guy. I bought a 6 year old boat from someone else and when I spoke with Dave he said to bring it in and he'd look it over to make sure everything was functioning correctly....and he did. It's a well built solid boat.
Good Luck!

Very good boat, I have the 12' with platform, and all the accessories. Get a chain anchor and a rod holder that lays flat is the only changes I would make. Have had it out about 12 times since I got it. Can put it on the car, easy to manuever, floats great even with two rather sizeable fellows in it. ;)
