Scope Rings????

Hey guys...
I just bought a new 12-gauge with a scope. The package came with metal scope mounts and some plastic, horeshoe shaped rings (not complete rings but like a capital U). Does anyone know what these U-shaped rings are for?

What kind of gun did you purchase and did you purchase it new or used? Also, does it have full metal rings? Some scope rings come with a plastic "U" shaped inserts that fit inside the ring between the scope and the ring to keep the metal of the scope ring from marring the scope's finish...
