You can use just about any method with that rod. You could throw some hardware (i.e spinners, hot n tots, thundersticks), bottom bounce flies, spawn bags, etc Personally I would say get yourself a longer rod for bottom bouncing (aka chuck n duck) flies and spawn bags. But for throwing hardware around, that is decent rod.
This time of year, I would focus on fishing behind the hens. That is where your most aggresive fish (salmon) are going to be. Plus there is always a added bonus that a steelhead or trout (brown or bow) will take your offering.
Any other info that you would like? Just ask. I am sure that someone will help out with info than what I have put up.

I would copy print out Steve's description of rigging and fishing the Chuck and Duck method and following it exactly. Even though you are using spinning gear I would use flies because it so much fun. Fishing with a guide will put you years ahead of the game even if you only go once. Watch what they do and ask a lot of questions. Both the good and the challenge of fishing for steelhead and salmon is the game changes with every hole and every weather and water level change. Over time you will develop a sense of where the fish are and other people will help fill in your knowledge gaps. Have fun learning.
