Solicit your fishing buddies to join us......let's try to get 12. I pulled in Dave G, but I actually plan on tying both flies but figure I can convince him to tie a few.
It is a pretty easy sell. Tie one fly you are good at, trade it for one you probably have never seen before.

If needs be i can tie two. i have a bunch of Spare time on my hands but if i dont need to tie two then i woln't.

So i ran into a small problem at 3:30 in the morning. I have seemed to have ran out of purple thread so I was wondering if it was ok to use another killer color or do they HAVE to be the same color flies. Let me know I have purple going and im thinking of using yellow next, they are both two of the best when I have used them.

If we were that strict, we wouldn't have any partcipants. There can be variations among your flies, that is fine. The intent is to share one pattern with the entire group.
If you get a chance, please include the recipe for one color, and then list the other colors that are popular.

june works better for me as well. Not that it takes long to whip up a doz flies, but add in another swap I'm hosting on another site, 2 other swaps I'm in, a rod I have to finish building, and the weekend trips between now and then, and June looks better all the time:D

On a side note, I have never tied either fly before last night, so don't hold your breath for anything outstanding. I am planning to change the yellow perch pattern a bit to use rabbit instead of a grizzly feather. I didn't like how the feathers ended up looking and think I can achieve the same color stripping with a prismacolor marker and some rabbit fur!

Ditto on the "never tied this before" statement. The foam bug I was planning on tieing is a new one for me too. BUT... I was out on are local river down here the other night and found this fly in my box worked great on the rock bass that our river has (if they liked it maybe the large mouth's will too) Not sure where it came from !?!?
If I get the proper materials I might throw that one in the swap instead since it's already been proven for me.

well i went to my fly shop down state and was talking to a guy and he said that olive was a good color. so i tied them up and I am planning on sending them saturday or monday. i might tie some poppers and sent them out in a second shipment. but i have never painted and tied before so i might not send them if they look like goose turds.

Just a note for all you guys that are worried about your flies not being up to par. Don't sweat it. I've been in and hosted ton's of swaps and not once have I ever been "disapointed". Swaps are just a way to share some new ideas, patterns, or just plan a neat way to see what other people like to tie. No one expects to have fly book cover quality flies out of ever fly in every swap that they are in. It's just a way to share the sport of fly tying with like minded guys, so just tie up what your comfy tying and have fun, that's what it's all about:cool: :)

I'm about done with my set. I plan on sending out 12 of them. Spanish: If there are extra, feel free to keep for handling the swap.
Just wanted to remind all that a small recipe card is nice to have when sending in your flies.
The last swap (steelies) someone sent in an olive fly that worked great for me (until the river claimed it !! ) I can't remember much about it now and I couldn't find the recipe in the last shipment. If anyone can remember tieing this pattern please PM me the recipe since I would like to have some more of these in my box.

I believe spanishfly suggested April 16th for the fly mail in date. Here's the recipe for the Wooly Sculpin.
Hook: 3X Long, 2X strong standard streamer - size 4 to 8
Thread: Gudebrod GX2 (only comes in white)
Tail: 1 or 2 long maraboo plumes
Body: Rooster hackle palmered over medium to large chenille
Collar: Deer hair
Head: Spun deer hair (w/optional cone head)
Here is web link to see a picture of this streamer. Also can be found in Kelly Galloup's book "Modern Streamers for Trophy Trout".
[URL="http://www.llbean.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?storeId=1&langId=-1&catalogId=1&categoryId=20702&qs=6102228%2DBobVila_71940502"]
Dave
These were tied with either a grizzly dyed brown/tan maraboo tail or a solid yellow maraboo tail, rooster hackle was grizzly dyed olive and used a natural deer hair collar and head.

Does everyone think they will be ready to ship June 2nd? If not, please let us know when you will be able to ship.
Also, I don't think everyone has my address. Please PM me if you need it. I may or may not respond until after Memorial Day. Also, you can post an address request in this swap and someone who does have it can PM it to you. Please don't post my address though.

If you guys would not mind could we push that mailing date to the 6th. Will shoot for the second, but am also wanting to put together some flys for the coming week and I know I would be safe for the 6th..:)

Do to my recent new job assignment I have to regretfully withdrawal from the current Bass Fly Swap. I know, I know, I always wait to the last minute to tie my flies, and I couldve tied them earlier, but with the new job assignment and relocation theres no way I can get then done in the next couple weeks. I could buy some bass flies from a local shop, but I dont think you guys and myself would think this is what a fly swap is all about. Please dont count me out for the next swap. Things will be a little more stable with me and Ill be ready to participate with no more worries about my job situation. Sorry I let you guys down, I will make it up to you in the future.

Same with mine, as they will be sent out in the morning. Got to love having the fiancee's mom work at the Post Office, never have to go there. Again hope you guys like my brain child of a fly. The only thing it's got going for it is, that you can catch a bass on a beer can with hooks.:D

And me as well,
one question though, I don't know if someone will have time to answer before I mail it but since I never participated in a swap before I really do not know how to mail it so that some post office employee does not become a fish substitute through an envelope or something. Do you mail them in some special envelopes or a small box?
Thank you

I've used an altoid tin before but with the bass flies I used a larger plastic container just in case. (my wife owns a hair salon so I used a comb case) I always use envelopes with the bubble-wrap stuff as extra cushion. When I go to the post office I have them weigh the return envelope and my flies as one unit and then I have them weigh the entire package to be sent. Once weighed I usually put enough postage on the return package to cover an extra ounce of weight. On the return package I write my address as the return address also. Any type of container / box will work as long as it fits in the envelope.

You can put them all in a ziploc bag, lay it flat, spread out the flies, roll it, and put a rubber band on it. That works well also.

Sorry Everyone! I'm 2 days late for the mail in and I still haven't tied a single fly. I'm going to get it done this weekend and mail them out no later than Monday afternoon. I really don't have a real good excuse except my weekends have been spent fishing and doing other chores - 2 round-trips from Holland to Mio and numerous day trips to the Muskegon and the Rogue. Haven't been up to the PM yet but plan to. This has got to be my last swap until probably late summer - too little time to fish and tie and keep up with my "honey-do" list.

A quick update... If you didn't already know, I'm tying Dave G's flies. I tied up a bunch the other day, and decided they weren't up to par so I'll put those in the "loaner" box (the minnows, and gulley worms). For whatever reason, I just didn't think they looked right. So, with that said, since I don't have all the flies yet, I'm going to tie a simple pattern that is proven to catch bass.
It is called the 321. Initially, it will want to float. You can either fish it as a surface fly until it soaks up water, or swish it to soak before casting. This fly runs shallow unless you've added weight or use a sinking line. Cast to shallow weedy areas or structures where bass are likely to hang. When the fly hits the water, count down: 3 - 2 - 1 , then strip with one sharp tug. Count down again, then strip with two sharp tugs. Count down again and strip three times. This is, of course, where the name comes from. Essentially, give the fly time to sink and vary the retrieve with sharp strips of the line. Most of the bass I've caught hit on the sink at "2" or "1" and immediately turn to go back to where they came from. Watch the line for any backward pulls and set the hook well.

Just a quick update on a field test of the fly I sent in. I felt kinda bad after I tied mine because I am a beginner as you will see. Today after trying the typical flies for summer run steelhead and not having much luck I decided to try my crawfish attempt.
That fly is weighted quite a bit and so after it sunk I gave it short slow strips. After just a few casts (5 or 6 I would guess) something hit it really hard and it turned out to be a nice summer steel that went balistic. Had him on for a few seconds and then my knot untied (I know, I know :( ) and even after that we got to see a few more (at least) 3 ft leeps.
Anyhow, that fly definitly isn't a work of art but it made my day that at least one fish thought it might taste good :)
Can't wait to see everybody's flies and learn some more

I'm finishing up my flies today and really will send them out Monday. I talked to my friend Bryon yesterday and he assured me that his flies will be finished today as well. Bryon originally was supposed to tie "Near-Nuff" Sculpins but was having trouble tying them (Bryon teaches fly tying so I'm guessing his "Near-Nuff" sculpins really would have been good enough). Bryon asked me to tell everybody that he is now tying a Feather-Craft pattern (I think he said crayfish but I also remember him saying ... shrimp ...).

Thanks for the update! I wasn't too concerned, since there hasn't been a lot of pressure asking when we are shipping, and I figured you'd find time over the weeked ;)

Whenever the flies arrive is fine with me. I checked yesterday and the fish are still in the river so they should still be there when I get my package too:D It's just like Christmas....the wait is always worth it !
Thanks again to all.

Ok, so we have all but one. I will ship the flies so they arrive in time for the Fourth of July weekend, regardless. I believe the last set will be in before then though....

All flies have been shipped! Again, THANK YOU to all that participated. I hope everyone enjoys the flies! I am certainly glad I opted to tie Dave G's as I get to keep his and mine from the swap! Nothing like filling your Bass box with some neat flies from one swap!
Wow, can't wait to fish these this Saturday! I already have some locations picked out that I want to try each fly! Here fishy, fishy, fishy!
Tightlines all! Remember to watch for the Salmon Swap! Probably kick off last week of July, or first week in August!

Got my flies too and am way pleased! These swaps are fun and I am looking forward to the next one (early fall/late summer). I hope the lateness of my mail-in didn't upset anyone to badly. In any case, I think we've got a great group of tyers participating and it can only get better!:)

Swaps are fun and you can learn some new patterns! Mine was the worst of these though. I don't compare too you guys on bass flys. Not saying you wont catch fish, on my glue minnow but, the rest of them are alot better.;)

Pudge - I'll be spending my holiday weekend in your area, at Lake Somerset. I found a very detailed contour map of the lake, so I'm ready to fish some new spots! If I had some electronics, I would have already known about them. Still working on the bass boat. The boss says "not this year". Which is better than last years, "Why do you need a bass boat", and the year befores "No".
Ironically, she is all for getting a speed boat that we can drag the kids behind, but not a bass boat. Things changed when we saw a boat on a trailer going down the road and she told me I needed to get a boat like that one. Just happens it was a newer skeeter bass boat . I promptly agreed to get a boat "just like that one!!":D
So, I'd be willing to bet next year will be "I don't like that one".....or "We can't afford that right now"....
Hope everyone gets a chance to test the flies this holiday weekend! Remember to be safe!
