Float rig for Big lake

Hi all,
I have read somewhere (maybe here) of using a float with spawn off the pier in Lake Michigan. Would this just be a slip bobber? If so, how is it better than a bottom sliding rig? Any information is appreciated.

last weekend i trolled for steelies at ludington and got 5 on sat in 110 ft water.spent some time around the pierheads and saw a few small steelies caught on spawnbags fished on bottom with a pyramid weight-most on the inside of breakwall-fished the pm sun am and caught 1 salmon and 1 steelie on spawn down by the dow plant wading and casting to deep, dark water. tried flies sun pm by indian bridge but no luck.. too many redneck snaggers!
haven't seen any guys using your indicator off the pier or using flies...
