Hello,
Haven't been on the forum for a while. So it's good to be back. Now, a couple of questions for those entire successful hunter and their methods. I'm taking my girlfriend to the Upper Peninsula this coming weekend. I have an archery tag and a bear permit burning a hole in my wallet. Our camp is in between Munising and Marquette. This area is known for a low deer heard and some nice black bears. Ive hunted up there ever since I was 16 with limited success. Last year saw a nice bear, but no tag. Went up a couple times this summer and early fall to bait for bear and they've enjoyed it. The bears tore my bait piles apart. The last time i skipped the meat and stuck to apples, corn and carrots. I was hoping that the piles would maybe attract deer too. But I put out a separate pile just in case. Questions are the following.
1. This time of year the bucks are supposedly in Pre-Rut. Would any type of deer pee work. Example....tinks 69
2. Has anyone had any success on mock scrapes? (Using those drippers and scents)
3. The biggest deer Ive ever seen in the wild was in this area. Not going into details on how bad I MISSED him, but I rattled him in during rifle season. The question is; would rattle this time of year bring any possible success, or just scare deer away.
4. I just started hunting without bait this season and have seen numerous deer, and a few bucks. I want to try this method in the Upper Peninsula. The problem is that there is so much ground and no deer trails. All the deer walk where ever and use old logging trails. What sure I look for possibly. Ive read magazines all summer about the no-bait strategy. Looking for ridges, and funnels, but it just seem all the buck sign that Ive found are on these old roads. Any help?
I currently use white lightning cover scent and it works well. Plan on sticking to that. Would using fox urine scare more deer then covering my scent?
I guess my plan was to make some mock scrapes with some buck tarsal gland scent around the bait piles. (25-30 yds within bow range) and do some light rattling to simulate buck fighting over territory. Along with that, I might use a little doe in heat lure or doe pee. I figured there will be since rutting activity is started down here.
I figure the bear will come in as long as theres bait and no human scent. Went up there two weekends ago to bait, and scared a bear off the pile. So I know there coming in. To be honest, I get more excited about deer hunting then bear hunting. Dont get me wrong, Im excited to bear hunt, but I have a goal to harvest a nice buck with my bow in the U.P. Harvesting a bear is not an easy task either. Overall, Im hoping to have an enjoyable weekend with the woman and maybe shoot something.
Thank you for any input.
Sincerely,
Chris
